Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A REMAPPING?

Remapping involves making changes to the software held on your vehicle’s ECU (Electronic Control Unit) for controlling your engine’s settings, and therefore its performance and economy characteristics. These changes involve replacing the factory-loaded ‘engine settings instructions’ with new software.

HOW CAN REMAPPING BENEFIT MY CAR?

Installing new instructions that control your vehicle’s engine settings will improve power and drivability to your vehicle. These improvements include improved throttle response, turbo performance (where fitted) and possibly improved economy.

WHY DOESN’T THE MANUFACTURER DO THIS FROM THE START?

The engine settings installed on the ECU by a manufacturer are designed to suit various vehicle model situations and circumstances. With so many of the same model being sold globally, there are many possibilities the manufactured model in particular must cope with dependant upon global geographical location.
The vehicle has to cope not only with various conditions such as extreme temperatures, (hot or cold) usage of fuel of variable quality and being driven by people with differing driving styles.

Our remapping sets your vehicle suitable for the driver their preferences. It’s like buying a tailor-made suit as opposed to buying one ‘off the peg’.

HOW COMPLICATED IS A REMAPPING?

Remapping does not have to be complicated, especially when being conducted by a team with expertise in the required field. We don’t replace parts in your engine or dismantle anything; we connect your ECU to our diagnostic equipment and analyse the software already there. After analysation, the vehicle software is rewritten and tailored to your vehicle, is downloaded onto the ECU.

HOW LONG DOES REMAPPING TAKE?

Remapping is a non-invasive process that takes in the region of two hours typically although this does depend on engine type and the manufacturer.

I’D LIKE TO SAVE MORE FUEL - HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Possibly; as you can see elsewhere on the website under ‘Services’ we offer an ‘economy’ remapping option.

IF ONLY DRIVE A SMALL RUNABOUT; IS REMAPPING WORTH IT?

Yes, most certainly! Many of our customers drive mainstream vehicles such as compact hatchbacks, mid range saloons, family cars and light vans. If you choose to have remapping services with Xtreme Tuning, you will certainly notice an improvement in overall drivability and responsiveness.

CAN I TRUST MY EXPENSIVE MOTOR SPORTS CAR WILL NOT BE DAMAGED?

With over 10 years’ experience, XTREME TUNING Remapping services has steadily become a respected name in the diagnostics and remapping field. We are used to working on vehicles from a wide variety of manufacturers and only use the very latest in industry standard equipment.

WILL INCREASING THE POWER PUT A STRAIN ON THE ENGINE OR GEARBOX?

When conducting any remapping services, we only ever work within the possible particular vehicle parameters possible. In general, vehicle remapping is designed to improve general drivability, not just outright engine power.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO REVERSE A REMAP?

Yes certainly! Prior to conducting the remap, we create a backup of the original ‘factory’ software on a customers’ ECU and retain it, in case they may want their vehicle returned to its original state.

DO I NEED TO TELL MY INSURANCE COMPANY IF I’VE HAD A REMAPPING?

Yes as it counts as a modification.

SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH DPFS IN GENERAL?

The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is designed to remove soot particles from diesel exhaust emissions in the light of ever-more stringent emissions regulations.
The problem in some cases is when the filter can’t operate for long enough at its optimum temperature in vehicles used for lots of short trips and stop/start driving. As a result the DPF loses its ability to filter the soot particles and it eventually affects the performance and fuel economy of the vehicle.

Once a DPF gets to this stage it may need expensive replacement.

DO I NEED TO TELL MY INSURANCE COMPANY IF I’VE HAD A REMAPPING?

HOW CAN YOU HELP ME?
We may be able to salvage your DPF by cleaning and/or replacing a component if something is malfunctioning (such as a faulty sensor mistakenly triggering a DPF warning light on your dashboard).

We’d conduct a full diagnostic test to see what the problem is and either replace the errant component or undertake a DPF clean.
